CBSE Class 10 Board Exams 2026 For First Exam Mandatory

CBSE: From 2026, Class 10 Board Exams to Be Held Twice a Year; First Exam Mandatory

Notification Issued – First Exam in February and Second in May; Second Attempt Will Be Optional

New Delhi

From the academic session 2025-26, students studying in Class 10 will have the opportunity to appear for the board exam twice a year. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the first board exam in February and the second in May. The first exam will be mandatory, while the second will be optional.

According to Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Director of Examinations at CBSE, the board will begin holding Class 10 board exams twice a year from 2026. A notification regarding this has already been issued. This decision has been taken under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to reduce academic pressure by offering students multiple opportunities.

Students Not Appearing in Three or More Subjects in the First Exam Will Not Be Allowed in the Second

If a student does not appear for three or more subjects in the main (first) exam, they will not be allowed to take the optional (second) exam. The notification also clarifies that the difficulty level of the question papers in both exams will be the same, to ensure fairness for all students. The board has also stated that students must inform in advance if they intend to take the second exam.

In the academic year 2025-26, students of Class 10 will get one main exam attempt, which will be held in February 2026. Those students who feel dissatisfied with their performance in this exam will have the option to reappear in the second exam in May 2026.

Passing Criteria Remain the Same

Students will be declared passed based on their performance in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and one language or vocational subject. Among the two exam attempts, the higher score will be considered final.

This means that if a student scores fewer marks in the first attempt and higher marks in the second, the better score will be recorded in their mark sheet.

Relaxation for Students Under Sports Quota

Students enrolled under the sports quota will be given relaxation in rules. Such students will be allowed to appear in special exams so that they can participate in sports competitions.

Internal Assessment Will Be Conducted Only Once

Internal assessments for Class 10 board exams will be conducted only once. That means students will not need to undergo separate internal assessments for both attempts. The result of the internal assessment will be submitted to the board for the first exam only.
